Chapter Nineteen
Ruby slept part of the day. At least, Melody thought she had slept some. She had heard Ruby moving around a few times after she brought her home from the diner, and Boochy had come out of the guest room a few times for food, water, and to be taken out for a short walk. When Melody had gone in to ask what Ruby wanted for lunch, she had only replied that she wanted to sleep. The curtains had been drawn tight, and Ruby was only a lump under the cover next to Boochy, who slept with his head across her hip. Melody had relented, not liking that her friend still wasnât eating, and she went about her chores as quietly as she could so as not to disturb Ruby.
That evening, Melody had decided she wasnât going to take no for an answer. Denver omelets topped with salsa and sour cream, served with a side of corn chips was on the menu for their dinner.
As Melody diced onions, Ruby came into the kitchen. Her hair had been brushed and her face washed, but she still looked like death warmed over. Her eyes were sunken and purple half-moons hung under her eyes as if sheâd been in a bar room brawl and come out on the bad end of it. Her sallow complexion was possibly the worst Melody had ever seen since they were kids and Ruby had gotten a stomach virus that lasted for three days and she ended up being hospitalized overnight to finally get rid of it.
âWell, hey there, sleepyhead. Feel any better?â
Ruby nodded. âNot really,â she said and chuckled.
The chuckle told Melody that she must feel a bit better emotionally. It hadnât been dry and forced, and her face actually lit up a little with the sound.
âWell, Iâm making dinner,â Melody said, grinning as she held up a red bell pepper. âDenver omelets and corn chips.â
Ruby grinned. It was another sign she was perhaps on the mend, but with the dark under her eyes and her sickly pale face, the expression was a bit garish. âMmm. We used to eat those all the time. Itâs been so long since Iâve had one.â
It had been their food of choice throughout their teen years and into their early twenties. Almost every time they got together, they had the omelets and corn chips. Most people had wrinkled their noses in similitude of repulsion at the description, but the girls had always laughed and gone right on loving it. Just thinking about it brought back good memories of being young and practically carefree, laughing, and enjoying each otherâs company. Sometimes, the past with its sense of calm and safety called to Melody in the strangest ways and by the oddest things. The omelets and chips, for example.
âI thought it would be nourishing, and good.â Melody went back to dicing vegetables.
âNot to mention quick and pretty easy. We had them so often back in the day, either of us should be able to make them with our eyes closed.
